There will be two Jyeshth months in the Vikram Samvat 2075. This ‘Adhik-Maas’ will be held from May 16 to June 13, 2018. Adhik-Maas is known as Mal-Maas, Purushottam Maas etc. ‘Adhik-Maas’ takes place only from the Hindu month Chaitra to Ashwin months; as Kartik, Marg Sheersh Paush, Magh and Falgun are Kshaya months. No auspicious works like marriage, inauguration functions of home, shops, start of new business or others should not be performed during the ‘Adhik-Maas’ period. Meanwhile, it is said that religious and spiritual works; performed during ‘Adhik-Maas’, are very effective for the well-being of devotees.
Two Jyeshth months are coming after the gap of 10 years. The religious and spiritual works performed during this period provide ten times more good effects. Prior to this, the ‘Adhik-Maas’ had come in Jyeshtha month in the year 2007.
As per Hindu ‘Panchang’, ‘teethies’ get lapse after every three years. This lapse of ‘teethies’ turns into ‘Adhik-Maas’ after the period of three years. When the ‘Surya- Sankranti’ do not take place during ‘Chandra-Maas’, that month is called ‘Adhik-Maas’. Meanwhile, when two sankraties get lapsed in ‘Chandra-Maas’, that month is called leap year. As per the calculation of Hindu ‘panchang’, the Solar year contains 365.2422 days; while the Lunar year contains 354.327 days. There is the difference of 10.87 days during both the calendar years and this difference turns into one month after every three years. Therefore, to get relief of this imbalance the rule of ‘Adhik-Maas’ and ‘Kswhya-months’ have been created in the Hindu ‘Panchang’.
Importance of ‘Adhik-Maas’
As per Hindu religion, every human being is made by ‘Panch-Mahabhut’. According to their nature, these five elements decide every human being’s nature. Through all the religious acts, meditation, spiritual and other such works performed during the ‘Adhik-Maas’ period, devotees can try to keep the balance in all these five elements. Devotees can try to progress with the performing of spiritual and other religious acts during ‘Adhik-Maas’. Along with these spiritual and religious acts people should do the pilgrimages of sacred seven oceans, taking dips in holy rivers and donate essential thing to needy people. Devotees should pass their time in hearing sacred and religious books, participate in devotional musical programmes like ‘bhajan-kirtan’ during the ‘Adhik-Maas’. As per our holy books, arrangements to take benefits of holy acts have been done during the ‘Adhik-Maas’ for the devotees. It is more important to take holy dips in sacred rivers, make donations to needy people, perform ‘jap’ and other spiritual acts after ending the ‘Adhik-Maas’. With such spiritual and religious acts, devotees can purify their soul and make them fresh with positive energy after every three years. It is said that all the bad effects of people’s horoscope can be removed by performing such spiritual and religious acts during the ‘Adhik-Maas’ period.
What to do during ‘Adhik-Maas’…
Devotees should take early bath and perform prayers of Sun god by offering ‘Arghya’ and then do the ‘pujan’ of Lord Vishnu’ at the start of ‘Adhik-Maas’ period. Devotees should sleep on earth, take meal once in a day, and perform religious works devoted to Lord Purushottam means Lord Shri Krishna. Devotees should recite the ‘paath’ of religious books like Harivansh-Puran, Shrimad Bhagwat, Ramayan and other such sacred books. At the time of completion of ‘Vrat’, devotees should keep fast, do the ‘Brhaman-bhojan’ and donate food items like Gud, Malpua, Kheer, Ghee, clothes and other essential things to needy people. By performing such religious and spiritual acts during the ‘Adhik-Maas’, devotees are blessed by Lord Vishnu himself and remove devotee’s sinful acts and fulfill all the wishes of them.
Mythological base of ‘Adhik-Maas’…
There is a beautiful story regarding ‘Adhik-Maas’ in Mythological books. This story belongs to demon-king Hiranyakashyapu’s killing. As per the ‘puranas’, demon-king Hiranyakashyapu did hard ‘tap’ to please lord Brahma. After completion of his ‘tapasya’, lord Brahma appeared and asked him to take the boon. Hiranyakashyapu asked the boon of immortality. As this was not possible for lord Brahma to give such boon; Brahma asked him to take another boon. After that, Hiranyakashyapu asked Brahma to give the boon so that he could not be killed by any person, god, devil, animal, bird, arm and weapon. He also asked that he could not be killed in all the 12 months of year, not in day, night and in or outside of home. Brahma gave this boon to him. After taking this boon, Hiranyakashyapu thought that he had become immortal and started to torture and harass people. But, this is the Universal truth that no one is immortal. So, when time came, Lord Vishnu took the Avtar of Narsimha, half body of lion and half body was of man. Lord killed the demon-king during the ‘Adhik-Maas’ period, in the evening time and on the door-steps of his palace with his nails. Likewise, lord Narsimha killed the demon-king Hiranyakashyapu in ‘Adhik-Maas.’
